A Guide to Wilmington's Book Walks & Learning Trails

Make Learning a Walk in the Park

July 13, 2023

Luckily, the Wilmington, New Castle, and Hockessin areas have some fantastic libraries and parks in New Castle County. Did you know we also have quite a collection of book walks, story trails, and learning trails?

These trails bring books to life as visitors walk by signs with enlarged book pages. Book Walks spark their interest in learning and make predictions as they move throughout the story. Plus, children will connect with nature in new ways and explore local parks.

Located at schools, state parks, and other outdoor spaces, these trails encourage visitors to travel back in time, read stories in English and Spanish, and test their creativity while exercising their minds and bodies.

Learning is more fun on the move! How many of these paths have you visited?

DE’s First Dual-Language Born Learning Trail

Cool Spring Park, 10th & Van Buren Streets, Wilmington, DE 19802

The Born Learning Trail is a series of 10 interactive signs, featuring fun and active learning activities for children and their caregivers.

Written in English and Spanish, each signpost contains a learning prompt, game, or fun activity: hopscotch, dance, observing nature, counting, and more.

In partnership with Aloysius Butler & Clark, William C. Lewis Elementary, West Side Grows, and the City of Wilmington, this park was installed in 2023. Around the country, United Way and its partners have installed 750 trails in local parks, playgrounds, and trails. The Cool Spring's site is home to Delaware's first dual-language Born Learning trail.

Honoring Delaware’s Freedom Seekers

The Juneteenth Celebration Route features videos, visuals, and stories about the lives of Peter Spencer, Thomas Garrett, John Hunn, Ann Brown, Harry A. Craige, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Judy Johnson, and Louis Redding Jr.

"Tree Hugs"

Owl Babies
by Martin Waddell (Author), Patrick Benson (Illustrator)

"I want my mommy!" Three baby owls awake one night to find their mother gone, and they can’t help but wonder where she is. What is she doing? When will she be back? What scary things move all around them? Stunning illustrations from striking perspectives capture the anxious little owls as they worry.

Not surprisingly, joyous flapping and dancing and bouncing greet the mother’s return, lending a celebratory tone to the ending of this comforting tale. Never has the plight of young ones who miss their mother been so simply told or so beautifully rendered.

The story walks change bi-monthly, so, get ready for a new chapter of fun come fall!
