What is the Healthy Kids Running Series?
Founded in 2009, the Healthy Kids Running Series was created to motivate kids to lead a healthy and active lifestyle through a positive introduction to running!
Their mission is to engage communities and families by providing an inclusive youth running experience, inspiring kids to believe in themselves and lead an active healthy lifestyle.HKRS is a national, community-based non-profit that provides an inclusive five-week running series for ages 2-14, designed for kids to get active, feel accomplished, and lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
Based in Chadds Ford, HKRS hosts races in 35 states. And, we have one right in Wilmington, DE.

Pricing
- Series Racing: The registration fee ($45 until 8/31, $50 after 9/1) covers the entire five (5) weeks of the Series which includes race bibs for each week, a runner shirt, a finisher medal and any sponsor giveaways. Registration is non-refundable and non-transferable.
- Single-Day Racing: Single-day race registration opens one hour before the start of each race. The registration fee ($20) covers one race (to be run on the day of registration), a race bib, and a runner shirt while supplies last.
Healthy Kids Running Series
HKRS Divisions
Kids will earn points for each race they complete based on their finish.
- Pre-K (2-3 Year olds): 50 YD Dash
- pre-K(4-5 Year olds): 75 YD Dash
- Kindergarten – 1st grade: 1/4 Mile
- 2nd grade – 3rd grade: 1/2 Mile
- 4th grade – 8th grade: 1 Mile
- Challenger: This Series offers a Challenger Division which is an adaptive 75-yard race for children with disabilities and/or special needs. This allows for parents, siblings, and friends to be on the course with runners to provide support as well as supportive devices such as crutches, braces, wheelchairs, etc. to be used by runners. Each participant in this division will receive a finisher certificate.
Awards:
All participants receive a medal on Week 5! Trophies will be awarded to the overall top finishers in each of the divisions listed below (broken out by boys and girls respectively):
- Kindergarten & 1st Grade
- 2nd & 3rd Grade
- 4th & 5th Grade
- 6th to 8th Grade
- Challenger
Does HKRS run rain or shine?
Yes. Unless there’s thunder and lightning or other severe weather, we will usually lace up, rain or shine. The decision to cancel or postpone is made by each location’s Community Coordinator with the support of HKRS National Office.
